I worked with Thriftbooks in early 2022 to overhaul a pitch deck that would be shown to potential investors. Thriftbooks position in the book reseller market was strong but they needed help distilling their messaging and wrapping it all in a package that was easy to parse, but still presented hard numbers that they would drill down into. The overall look and feel was driven by the brands logo, since minimal other brand collateral existed at the time.
A business with no name
The first part of the journey, was finding a name. It was important that it be clearly tied to both the production of the work, but also the significance of commitment that textiles requires. With the long commitment required for most pieces, the process becomes meditative, you become strung along by the repeat motions. Knot after knot after knot after knot. As the artist she finds herself weaving, both literally and figuratively, her ideas and values into her work.
While Strands would’ve been preferred, local filings already had names too close to that so we modified it. People would call it Strands anyways, not Strands Textiles as time went on.
For the visual style, we looked to the freedom and expression of individuality in retro artwork, with it’s curvilinear type and soft welcoming palettes. Extra punch via an outline was added for visual clarity.
Let's get technical, techincal.
Part of her success was found in leading events and classes to teach people of varying levels of experience. Part of the value add of these classes were easy to parse technical diagrams with written instructions that people could follow along at their own pace. Keeping these monochrome assisted with visibility and lowered printing costs.
An initial website was built using Webflow that currently serves as an initial stepping stone for the brand, and a location to send people who might be interested in requesting comissions, but don't use instagram (her prefferred platform for client interaction and brand development). We utilized a few mid-century accents, and a very easy to parse arrangement for it's current design. As she decides on next steps, such as an online store, up to date class schedule with integrated scheduling, the site will continue to evolve. The website is currently under maintenance but the home page for desktop at the end of 2023 is shown below.
